Blog 10: CATW Practice 3

There are many stages in life where our identity changes with the passage of time. As a child you are in school and everybody considers you a student. Once you are done with school and graduate college you begin your professional career. You may become an MD and then people refer to you as the doctor. In the same way when we born we have family identification, this recognition has an impact throughout our life. In the article “How Your Birthday Order Influences Your Life Adjustment”, Forer talks about how the chronological order in which you are born in the family effects your life.

In his article, Forer talks about how for an individual, birth order in the family has a very important value. In some families the eldest child has more benefits then younger ones. Parents give the elder child more control and this may have a negative impact on the middle or youngest child. In my opinion parents should treat all children equally so that they can have similar benefits and ways of life.

When parents expect oldest child to be more responsible, the eldest child then begins to develop more self-concepts. He or she begins to think and act as an adult. For instance in my family I am the middle child. My eldest brother was always given more responsibility and was expected more from, therefore today he has developed a lot of self-concept and is very successful.

In such a family where the all efforts are put on the eldest child, often the middle child becomes confused in his/her goals of life. This even happens, though there is an elder sibling around to use as a role model. The middle child may try his/her best to shine but will always be compared to the eldest. The youngest child becomes the most nervous one in the family. He/she has two or more older siblings to be compared to. The youngest is also lucky as he/she now has many other people to help him/her.

In conclusion, the chronological order in which you are born in has a great impact on your life. Often it’s seen the eldest has most responsibility and the youngers are expected to follow in the elders path. Every child must be responsible in order to be more successful in life. The all need to hold their head held high even if there is no one to support then with their decisions.
